Anthony Leal High School Career
Anthony Leal played just several minutes from Assembly Hall during his high school career. At Bloomington South High School, Leal played under legendary high school coach J.R. Holmes. He comes from the same high school as former Indiana University shooting sensation Jordan Hulls.
Leal finished his high school career with a school record of 1,620 points and he was a first-team All-State choice, an Indiana All-Star, and he was named the Bloomington Herald Times Player of the Year. He averaged 18.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a senior.
His most impressive achievement was winning the 2020 Mr. Basketball in Indiana, which gave Archie Miller three consecutive award winners (Romeo Langford, Trayce Jackson-Davis, and Anthony Leal).
He is the son of Martin Leal and Sherry Leal who have strong roots with the Bloomington community and Indiana University. Leal selected Indiana University over Stanford on August 9, 2019 and he joined fellow committed teammates Trey Galloway and Jordan Geronimo. Five-star AAU teammate Khristian Lander would eventually reclassify to join the same recruiting class as well.
As a freshman, Leal appeared in 20 games in the 2020-21 season. He averaged 1.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 11.6 minutes per game.
In the 2021-22 season, Leal made 17 appearances and started twice, averaging 10.2 minutes per game. He shot 40.7% from the field and averaged 1.9 points per game. He was also named Academic All-Big Ten.
