CJ Gunn’s High School Career and Recruiting

Gunn is a product of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a sophomore, he averaged 7.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 35% from three. He also played through injury, hampered by a torn ligament for part of the season.

The four-star shooting guard prospect is ranked as the fourth best player in the 2022 recruiting class in the state of Indiana. He is also considered the 14th best shooting guard nationally in the class and is ranked 107th overall in the nation by the 247 Sports Composite rankings. Gunn reportedly had five offers before his commitment: Cincinnati, Xavier, Kansas State, Missouri, and Indiana. He also had interest from several other schools, including Michigan State, Ohio State, and Purdue.

IU was one of the first schools to contact Gunn when the 2022 recruiting window open. Gunn later said he texted with then coaches Archie Miller and Tom Ostrom every week. Indiana extended an offer to Gunn in August 2020. Gunn committed to Indiana on February 7, 2021. He noted the history of the program and the Indiana fan base where large reasons for his commitment.

After the firing of Archie Miller, Gunn decided to wait and speak with the next Indiana coach before determining whether he should re-open his recruiting. After accepting the head coaching position, Mike Woodson had his introductory press conference on a Monday and was on the phone with Gunn and his family the very next day. After a few brief phone calls, Gunn reaffirmed his commitment to the Hoosier program.

The calls came just a couple days before Gunn was set to play in the Indiana Class 4A State Championship game, so before hanging up Woodson reportedly left Gunn with a simple parting message: “Go kick ass on Saturday!”.
