Indiana Basketball: Lineup Report | Penn State — Jan 29, 2020

In a game where Indiana was unable to generate any momentum in the second half, the Hoosiers used 22 lineups in their Wednesday evening match up against No. 24 Penn State. The Hoosiers did not have Race Thompson (back) or Jerome Hunter (illness) as available options. Ironically, despite poor backcourt performance by the Hoosiers, Indiana’s best lineup by the plus-minus metric is the three-guard lineup that consisted of Franklin, Green, Durham, Jackson-Davis, and De’Ron Davis. That five finished the game with a 6-point positive margin for Indiana.

Notes from the Lineup Report

• While very few things went well on Wednesday, the three-guard combination of Franklin, Green, and Durham had some success, going +8 in 9:19. Those 3 had not played together since the final minutes of the Notre Dame game, when they came back from five points down to beat the Irish.
• Indiana’s offense struggled mightily when Rob Phinisee was on the floor on Wednesday, scoring 21 points in the 24:07 (.87 points per minute) that he played. When Phinisee was on the bench, IU scored 28 points in 15:53 (1.76 points per minute).
• Out of 22 different lineups used on Wednesday, seven of them had never been used in a game previously. That serves as a reminder that, even in late January, the coaching staff is exhausting all options trying to find groups that click.
• Indiana’s 22 unique lineup is an increase from the past several games. Despite not having Jerome Hunter and Race Thompson, the Hoosiers managed to create more combinations of players. Archie Miller used three guard lineups among other options.
