Jalen Hood-Schifino’s High School Career and Recruiting
Hood-Schifino was a highly recruited player in high school and came from an athletic pedigree. His mother played basketball at Lock Haven University and father played quarterback at Santa Monica College, and his uncle Vernon “Jake” Schifino Jr. was drafted in the NFL in 2002 to name a few of the athletes in his family. He started playing basketball at the age of 6 and his favorite NBA player is Kyrie Irving.
Montverde (pronounced maant-vehrd) had five players ranked in the 2022 top 50, led by Duke commit Dariq Whitehead including Hood-Schifino. He led his team to back-to-back high school national championships and was a Naismith third-team All-American. When looking at the 6-foot-5 combo guard’s skills, the first thing that jumps out is his ability to attack the rim. At his size, Hood-Schifino does an excellent job at taking the smaller defender to the rim and finishing over the top of them. Plus, he has the ability to blow by defenders with his speed and finish at a high-level and even pull up for the mid-range jump shot.
Hood-Schifino cited IU assistant Kenya Hunter as a key figure in his recruitment. Hood-Schifino took his official visit on June 28, 2021. He ultimately chose Indiana over Texas, Memphis, Tennessee, and Florida on August 24, 2021.
