Malik Reneau’s High School Career and Recruiting
Reneau originally committed to coach Mike White and Florida in September 2011. With the announcement of Mike White’s departure to Georgia, Reneau reopened up his recruitment. He decommitted in March 2022 and shortly committed to the Hoosiers just a month later. Prior to his commitment to Florida, Reneau was considering Indiana among his finalists.
Reneau was rated as a 4 to 5-star recruit at the time of his commitment to Indiana University in April 2022. He opted to join Indiana and fellow Monteverde teammate Jalen Hood-Schifino. As a result, he also joined CJ Gunn, and Kaleb Banks as part of Indiana’s 2022 class. The Hoosiers had a top-five recruiting class in the nation, per 247Sports, after the addition of Reneau. Indiana also held the top slot among Big Ten schools for 2022 recruiting.
Reneau is an athletic left-handed power forward that understands how to navigate in and around the paint. He has great control of his body and his footwork allows him to shake off defenders in the post. Primarily, Reneau earns his points through post play; however he has a crafty ability to score even catching passes a few feet outside the box.
Reneau has been working on shots away from the basket. He has hooks, fadeaways, and other tools in his tool box to do that type of damage. From his tape, you can tell that he is comfortable playing through contact. Occasionally, he may lose track of a defender and get blocked from behind. With his size and wing span, he has been able to still score at the high school level.
His speed is really highlighted in fast breaks or transitions. For his size and position, Reneau is an above average ball handler and he has the vision to be an effective passer, whether on a fast break or within the confines of a set play.
He can shoot the mid range and he has even taken threes; however, that will certainly be an area where he can improve. It will be interesting to see how Mike Woodson uses Reneau’s skill set to stretch the floor as Reneau seems to generate gravity under the basket.
