Steve Green High School (Silver Creek) Career
Steve Green played for his father Ray Green at Silver Creek High School where he scored a total of 1,404 points during his four years of high school. During that time, the Silver Creek Dragons went 58-14 on those teams.
In 1969, Steve Green took the Silver Creek Dragons to their first ever regional victory, defeating teams like Shawe Memorial, New Washington, Madison, Franklin and Shelbyville. Their success led them to Hinkle Fieldhouse where they faced an undefeated Indianapolis Washington team led by none other than future Naismith Hall of Famer and future Indiana University star George McGinnis. That team also had IU standout Steve Downing.
Steve Green Indiana University Basketball Career
Steve Green was one of Bob Knight’s first recruits ever at Indiana University. In 1971, Steve Green enrolled at Indiana University, which had a recent coaching change to a new, fiery head coach Bob Knight.
After sitting out his freshman year, Steve Green saw his first glimpse of post-season success. The 1972-1973 team advanced all the way to the 1973 NCAA Final Four before losing number one ranked UCLA in the Final Four.
In the two years following, Steve Green helped Indiana accumulate a 54-6 record that included only 2 losses to Big Ten opponents during this time. Indiana was the 1974 CCA Champion and an Elite Eight finisher in 1975.
Throughout his career at Indiana University, Steve Green scored a career 1,265 points and grabbed 413 rebounds. His Hoosier teams finished with a combined record of 76-12.
Steve Green Professional Basketball Career
After graduating from Indiana University, Steve Green entered the 1975 NBA Draft and he was selected 30th overall by the Chicago Bulls. Along with teammate John Laskowski, the pair were the first two picks by the Chicago Bulls in that draft. Green was also selected by the Utah Stars in the ABA Draft in 1975.
During his professional career, Green started off playing for the Utah Stars in the ABA where he had the most success. He averaged 14.9 points per game and shot over 82% from behind the free throw line. Green also averaged 7 rebounds in each contest with the Stars.
